EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE - Birth to Five

We have to draw up an action plan for continuous improvements of the education provision, covering the 6 areas of the foundation stage. They emphasise early literacy, numeracy and the development of personal social skills and contribute to children’s knowledge, understanding and skills in other areas.

In order to meet OFSTED requirements our educational provision for all children covers personal, social and emotional development; communication, language and literacy; problem solving, reasoning and numeracy; knowledge and understanding of the world; physical development; and creative development

1. Personal, social and emotional development

We encourage the children to concentrate when embraced in activities, taking into account the respect of others and valuing their ideas. We also encourage sharing and interaction whilst promoting the codes of acceptable behavior.

2. Communication, language and literacy
We aim to extend the children’s vocabulary, through talking and listening in various activities and experiences. This leads to the awareness and recognition of letter sounds with the enjoyment of books and free play.

3. Knowledge and understanding of the world
Throughout the year we do a wide variety of themes and topics. We enhance children’s knowledge and awareness by exploring various materials and equipment, This allows the children to develop their 5 senses. We give the children the opportunity to use a wide range of information technology equipment to develop their knowledge.

4. Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
We promote the development of mathematical awareness through number recognition and problem solving activities, which incorporates the mathematical language needed.

5. Physical development
Children are given the opportunity to practice gross and fine motor skills through play, the writing table and tabletop activities. They develop an understanding of the need and awareness of space through physical activities i.e. music and movement. We promote an understanding of keeping healthy and the changes that happen to our bodies when we are active.

6. Creative development
Through painting, dancing and role-play the children are encouraged to use their imagination. They do this by exploring various materials thus allowing them to express their feelings.
